Secondary Education Major: Social Studies
Open up a whole new world for your students.
As a social studies teacher, you’ll play a crucial role in helping students learn about history, better understand themselves, appreciate the diversity of society, and explore every corner of the world. From economics to psychology, a social studies education is necessary for students to help lead their generation into the future.
At Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, our social studies licensure program within the secondary education major prepares you to become a middle school or high school social studies teacher in grades 5–12.
Here, you’ll acquire the real-world experience and knowledge necessary to be an effective twenty-first-century educator. Engage in a wealth of hands-on learning, gaining firsthand insights into critical teaching aspects, including interacting with diverse students and families, providing mentorship, and empowering students to realize their full potential.
Our curriculum includes courses in global history, anthropology, sociology, geography, psychology, and American government. You’ll explore topics like the founding and development of the world’s great religions, society, the economy, and the contributions Americans of all backgrounds have made to our country. Here, you’ll acquire the invaluable experiences needed to one day lead your own classroom and make a difference in the lives of your students.
At Saint Mary’s, your journey transforms you into a discerning advocate of diversity, enabling you to embrace the inherent dignity of each student through the lenses of respect, open-mindedness, compassion, and equity – embodying the core values of our Lasallian Catholic heritage.
Share your passion for history and the study of other cultures with the next generation. Start at Saint Mary’s on our Winona Campus — and discover a world full of possibilities.
