Junior Gavan Schulte transferred universities after attending one semester at a larger school.
As someone who would love to one day go into sports analytics, he chose Saint Mary’s largely because it has the major he wanted — business intelligence and analytics. He’s always loved math, statistics, and business, and as an athlete, he believes combining his passions would make a great career.
He also chose Saint Mary’s because he could play Cardinal baseball. Some added benefits, he said, were the fact that the transfer process was smooth and easy and — as an avid fisherman and outdoors enthusiast, Winona is the place to be.
“The bluffs are amazing; there’s a lot of wildlife; the sunrises and sunsets are beautiful; the fall season here is gorgeous; and there’s so much you can do here because of the Mississippi River,” he said.
And, he added, although he wasn’t purposefully searching for a Catholic university, because he is Catholic, that too was an added bonus. He and his family spent two weeks this past summer on a mission trip to Tununek, Ala., where they gathered in fellowship with the underserved populations there and helped them install windows. “The coolest thing for me was seeing the simplicity of their lives and to disconnect from everything going on in our lives and be with them,” he said.
Schulte said he recommends Saint Mary’s 100 percent. “The small feel and community of Saint Mary’s has been really important to me,” he said. “Being able to connect with my teachers so closely is huge. Coming from (a larger school), I felt like a statistic there. At Saint Mary’s, it’s a tight knit family. People are going to make you feel special here.”
