The Minnesota Private College Council included Saint Mary’s as one of the Minnesota private colleges helping confront the rural health care shortage. Julie Gauderman, associate program director of nurse anesthesia in the School of Health and Human Services in Minneapolis, discussed how Saint Mary’s trains nurse anesthetists who are ready and willing to help ease health care demands in rural areas.

“‘It’s a passion of mine to have rural opportunities for students,’ [Gauderman] said. ‘Rural is a harder area to recruit skilled providers to.’ Yet, Saint Mary’s has been successful in doing just that, drawing students dedicated to rural practice from across the state. Today, its doctoral program sends students preparing to be registered nurse anesthetists to 45 clinical sites – ‘an extraordinary amount of which are rural,’ Gauderman said.”
