Biology Pre-Laboratory Scientist Major

For results that matter most, lab techs and cytotechnologists play a crucial role.

Pursue a career that goes behind the scenes in diagnosing and treating diseases. As a clinical laboratory professional, you’ll reveal some of the most critical answers physicians need to determine the best treatment for patients.

The biology pre-laboratory scientist major offers two emphases of study; medical laboratory science and cytotechnology. As a medical laboratory scientist, you’ll analyze biological specimens, perform scientific testing, and report results to physicians. As a cytotechnologist, you’ll study body cells to detect cancer and other abnormal conditions.

Whatever emphasis you pursue, you’ll complete a clinical year of internship through an affiliated program, such as the Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences.

Medical Laboratory Science Emphasis
Three years of coursework on the Winona Campus
Affiliated with the medical laboratory science programs at the Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences and the Veterans Administration Hospital in Hines, Ill.
Upon completion, you’ll receive a certificate in medical laboratory science or medical technology and are eligible to take the certification exam of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel, or any approved certifying agency.
